Breaking down walls

Ethnic Women and Domestic Violence

BREAKING DOWN THE WALLS OF SILENCE.

Dear Sisters: – “We at BlacknBlue understand all the reasons why ethnic women tolerate abuse and forced marriage, but it is your right that you do not have to tolerate any kind of abuse or oppression because of culture that has nothing to do with our religions. Please register your support by using our Blog on this site and share your experiences, your views to empower and give confidence to other women to come forward, report violence and abuse and end the vicious cycle

The Facts –Many ethnic women particularly those from South Asian backgrounds suffer Domestic Violence / Forced Marriage in silence and isolation especially those who live in a close environment with their husband’s extended family. Ethnic communities bury their heads in the sand over these issues relying on the fear of the women involved to keep it from ever being brought out into the open and thus eradicating it..

Most of these women (especially those new to the UK) are afraid to speak out about their plight due to fears regarding losing children, deportation, shame of divorce in their family and community, financial destitution – silently suffering physical violence from the partner, his family or even their own family..

Many of these women were married to these men by force, in the first place (which can be physical, mental or emotional blackmail) and some are not even aware what they are tolerating is abuse..

Many of the children of these women will become abusers themselves through witnessing a culture of abuse in their family without any corrective learning to change their thoughts and behaviours..

Ending the Cycle of Abuse – BlacknBlue is determined to bring an end to Domestic Violence/Forced Marriage against ethnic women and have set up various services to help both existing victims and those women who may be vulnerable to abuse.
